New Qualifications For the Energy From Waste & Biomass Industries

Following on from a series of consultations with key businesses in the industry, it was identified that operations and technical staff at small scale Biomass and Energy Recovery / Energy From Waste plants would benefit from specific recognised qualifications to aid with their professional development; and to allow managers to ensure that staff have the level of understanding required to operate plant as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Due to the different requirements of sites around the UK and the variation of ease in which staff can be released for training, it was essential that the qualification be flexible to suit any number of needs. Assessment would need to clearly show where the level of understanding is strong or underperforming so that further development opportunities can be easily identified. Most importantly, the content needed to be representative not just of the plants operational principles but of the environmental challenges that are faced on a day to day basis.

From these findings, we have created two qualifications to support the industry, both of which are accredited by City and Guilds.

The first qualification consists of ten modules, each of which are one day in duration and cover fundamental operating principles ranging from thermodynamics to control & instrumentation all the way through to energy and the environment. These modules can be delivered at your site as frequently or infrequently as you please or here at the Engineering Academy over two consecutive weeks. The qualification is called City & Guilds 9848-42 Certificate in Principles & Operation of Small Thermal Plant for Heat & Power Production (Part 1).

The second qualification takes what has been learnt in Part 1 and expands upon key selected elements through the completion of work based assignments. This process will further extend and develop their understanding of their own site by applying what they have learnt to investigate and analyse the operation of specific systems and processes at their own place of work. The qualification is called City & Guilds 9848-43 Certificate in Principles & Operation of Small Thermal Plant for Heat & Power Production (Part 2).
